Fewer motorcycle thefts this year

PETALING Jaya, Gombak and Shah Alam in Selangor may have recorded the highest number of motorcycle theft cases in the state, but thanks to active police patrols, there has been a reduction in the number of reported cases.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said active policing on the streets, based on an established crime pattern, had helped to minimise vehicle theft cases.
Overall, Selangor recorded a total of 11,138 motorcycle theft cases for this year. Out of this figure, the three districts, Petaling Jaya, Gombak and Shah Alam saw 2,193, 1,530 and 1,331 cases respectively.
DCP Tun Hisan said the figures for motorcycle theft in Selangor in 2010 stood at 13,751 while it had dropped to 12,959 cases last year.
“We are glad that the number of cases has declined for the second year since 2010.
“Our revised strategy in policing, coupled with stepped-up search operation to locate stolen motorcycles have reduced the incidence of thefts,” he added.
DCP Tun Hisan said motorcycles remain a popular target for criminals because they were not difficult to steal.
“Motorcycles are small and can be moved with ease; this makes them vulnerable to theft,” he said.
He added that Selangor police had gone all out to act on reported cases. A total of 6,288 and 3,256 motorcycles were recovered last year and this year respectively.
“To keep things in perspective, the estimated number of motorcycles on Selangor’s roads is 500,000 to one million units within a day and we urge owners to take all measures to curb theft.
“Thieves steal motorcycles to resell the whole vehicle or strip them down and sell the parts.
“Based on police intelligence, some stolen motorcycles have been smuggled out in tongkang (barter trade boats) and sold in Indonesia,” he said.
DCP Tun Hisan advised motorists to protect their investment and make them less appealing to thieves.
“We must make it difficult for them to steal. You can use two locks, park the bike where it is visible to the public and attach an alarm.
“It might not be enough to deter a determined thief but it might cause him to move to a weaker target,” he said.
DCP Tun Hisan added that in some cases, motorcycle owners had left their vehicles unlocked, sometimes with keys still in the ignition.
“Some just leave the engine running to run errands outside the post office or the neighbourhood store.
“We have had numerous crime talks about this and we hope our advice to not be complacent is heeded,” he said.

Motorcycles joined by ‘big trucks’ in helping Kaua‘i’s needy

LIHU‘E — Russell Haluapo fired up his motorcycle Sunday, signaling the start of the annual caravan of motorcycle enthusiasts and pickups leaving from the grounds of the Historic County Building in Lihu‘e.
“This is No. 21,” said Haluapo, a man of few words, while cruising through the field of motorcycles parked for the 21st annual motorcycle ride. “This year, I got a phone call from someone asking if the big trucks could join. They said they had about 40 vehicles.”
Raised pickups, both domestic and imports, joined the hundreds of motorcycles representing the many different motorcycle clubs on the island. Each rider contributed a new toy for a needy keiki, or nonperishable food to benefit the Hawai‘i Foodbank, Kauai Branch.
The Hawai‘i Foodbank, Kaua‘i Branch is a new beneficiary to the annual ride which benefited children who normally “fall through the cracks,” Haluapo said.
“Children get hungry, too,” he said. “When they asked, you have to think about the children. Everything we do on this day is for the keiki.”
Bobby Barros, the former president of the Garden Isle Racing Association and a classic car enthusiast, rolled his Nissan Pathfinder through the horde.
“Where are the classic cars?” he said. “They need to be part of this event. Maybe now that I’m no longer involved with drag racing, we can get the classic car owners to become part of this effort to help our kids.”
Motorcycle riders from all parts of the island converged on the big ride, being greeted by Santa Claus who had a candy cane for all.
“This is the 23rd year I’ve done this,” Santa said, taking time to hand a candy cane to a homeless pair. “But today, I need to be done by noon because I have to help at the Kaua‘i Humane Society Santa Paws fundraiser from noon until 4 p.m. This is such a good event and people always participate because it helps the keiki.”
Haluapo led the prayer of hundreds of people in the shadow of a pickup filled to the bed’s brim with new toys glistening in the sun, and then joined Santa in leading the caravan which visited Kapa‘a before making its way to Koloa and points west.

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip, legendary mega-camping resort and world class entertainment complex, will be featured in three new hour-long specials premiering on the Travel Channel over the next three weeks beginning this Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 9:00 p.m. EST. During the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally the Buffalo Chip hosts the majority of the rally’s estimated 400,000 plus visitors with its nine day-and-night music festival, high-end camping amenities, interactive activities and exhibits, and breathtaking location. Catch thre hours of action from the 2012 Buffalo Chip experience beginning Sunday, December 2, 2012 on the Travel Channel. Go to www.BuffaloChip.com for more information, to learn about the growing 2013 music festival line up and to make your reservations at The Legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip has for 31 years been the cornerstone destination for visitors from around the world as they flock to the Black Hills of South Dakota for the famed Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The Buffalo Chip, with it’s 580 acre camping resort and world class concert series known as The Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling, annually attracts such legendary artists as Journey, The Zac Brown Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shinedown, Boston, Sugarland, Kid Rock, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan and Toby Keith. The Buffalo Chip, a longtime favorite of production companies looking to capture the authentic Sturgis experience, will once again be the centerpiece for three new one-hour TV specials airing on the Travel Channel.

These three new programs, “Sturgis Overdrive” airing Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 9:00 p.m. EST, “Sturgis Metal Mania” airing Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 9:00 p.m. EST and “Sturgis Biker Madness” airing Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 9:00 p.m. EST, will each take a unique look inside the world’s largest motorcycle rally and feature all that Sturgis has to offer to those who come to visit, ride and enjoy the lifestyle of this truly unique American event.

“We are thrilled that the Travel Channel has once again chosen the Buffalo Chip as a key element of its new Sturgis Rally programs,” says Buffalo Chip owner Rod Woodruff. “The Chip has been featured in numerous international television series and specials over the years, but we expect these three shows from the Travel Channel will give a new perspective of the culture of the rally. They will also highlight the entertainment, activities and overall excitement that only takes place at the Buffalo Chip.”

2012 was the biggest year ever at the Buffalo Chip, with more campers and concert goers having enjoyed the Chip’s one-of-kind atmosphere and entertainment than ever before. 2013 looks like it will be another record-breaking year for the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s nine day and night music festival, with confirmations already announced from multi-platinum country star Toby Keith and the iconic rock band ZZ Top.

PFDs and helmets, pass the laws and save us from ourselves

Recently Pennsylvania passed a law requiring Personal Flotation Devices to be worn at all times in any watercraft, even in paddle craft like canoes and kayaks.  I have to say I concur.  Somebody must have drowned that fell out of a canoe while paddling and that must be stopped.  Infringement on personal liberty? Hogwash!  There should no risk to living whatsoever and the government is darn well responsible for every single possibility.  (Just don’t take an ambassador job in Benghazi, apparently the government is less concerned about ambassadors.)  I think we should carry it further than just paddle craft though.  After all, I have heard that people have drowned while swimming so it’s no stretch to me that we should extend PFD wear to all swimmers.  I mean it’s one thing to have a possibility of falling in the water, but to deliberately get in the water without a PFD is sheer INSANITY!   Better to drag someone kicking and screaming in a wet bathing suit to jail than have the possibility of them drowning while swimming.

Also I hear in San Antonio the occasional person who has been drinking in one of the many bars along the River walk will fall into the river and drown.  Simple solution. They should pass a law that anyone drinking should wear a PFD. In fact, we have the Pearl River running through Jackson and at any time someone could stumble and fall into it, so I think the City Council should make a law requiring PFD’s at all times for anyone in downtown Jackson.  I’ve seen some of those council meeting and it’s pretty obvious those folks are drinking and they are planning a new “River walk” after all, so just go ahead and pass the law.  Think of the lives that will be saved and how fashionable those city council meetings will be with everyone wearing a nice bright orange PFD.

But it’s not like the City Council is not watching out for us because they are potentially going to pass an ordinance that you must wear a helmet while riding a bike or pay a $75 fine.  I must be the luckiest guy on Earth because I rode a bike from the time I was big enough to the time I bought my first car and I never had a head injury.  Wow, Incredible.  Actually none of my friends had head injuries either.  How lucky we all were.

But it was a lesson in life that demonstrated why someone must wear a helmet, at all times really.  When I was a kid I had a little Honda Cub 90 motorcycle and I dutifully wore a helmet because it was the law, but one  day a policeman really showed me the importance of a helmet.  You see I took my motorcycle up to one of the pressure wash places to wash it. Unfortunately the pressure wash got water in the points and it wouldn’t crank.  I was just a few blocks from home so I decided to just push the bike home.  It was of course the middle of the summer and 100 degrees out so I had the helmet strapped on the seat while I sweated bullets pushing the heavy motorcycle.  Occasionally I would get just a little hill and I would jump on the seat and coast the bike a little ways before I had to push again.  An incredibly nice and concerned police officer turned his lights on when he saw me do this without my helmet on.  Even though I was obviously pushing the motorcycle home because it would not crank and only coasting a few yards every now and then, the nice police officer gave my sixteen year old self a ticket for “riding a motorcycle without a helmet”.   I guess the law didn’t say anything about the motorcycle actually being under power.  Gee, I had no idea I was in such danger.  At the time I was just a youth and did not have the knowledge and wisdom of that nice police officer. Even my parents who had to pay the ticket did not understand his great wisdom.  Now that I am much older, I can see the incredible foresight and knowledge the police officer was demonstrating by applying the law as he saw fit instead of it’s intent.  Yes, I can see that now, can”t you?

So we shouldn’t stop there.  Heck anybody can just fall down at any time. The darn cat almost tripped me just the other day.  Heck I could have fallen in the Pearl or hit my head on some stupid art work the city has paid for with my taxes, like a concrete catfish or something. So we should have a law where everyone should wear a PFD and a helmet at all times.  That way if one should fall down or fall in the water, they will be just fine. I mean those city council folks really know how to look out for us.  I mean other than those pesky letters I get from the city about Ecoli in the water which is not safe to drink and their pumping untreated effluent into a river I would like to catch fish in.  No, no, I am glad to see them taking on important issues like bike helmet ordinances.  Save us from our own poor judgement and force us under threat of citation to do what many do on their own and others might not want to do because maybe they are not an “extreme biker” and don’t ride but occasionally for the fun of it.  If you don’t believe they are taking care of business just go down there and watch a meeting sometime, and enjoy a cocktail from wherever they must be getting them.  Oh and from what I have seen of those meetings, you might really need a helmet… BTW: The helmet ordinance issue has been moved to the December 11 agenda for vote at 10:00.  Wear your helmet and PFD for safety.

HERO MOTOCORP BEGINS DISPATCHING THE PASSION X-PRO 110CC COMMUTER TO DEALERSHIPS ACROSS INDIA

Ahead of the big Indian festival of Diwali, Hero MotoCorp, the world’s largest two wheeler maker by volumes, has begun dispatching its latest commuter motorcycle, the Passion X-Pro 110, to dealerships across the country. The Passion X-Pro commuter motorcycle will be Hero MotoCorp’s answer to the likes of the Suzuki Hayate 110 and the Honda Dream Yuga, and will feature a 110cc four stroke engine. This engine has been borrowed by Hero from Honda, which uses the same engine in the likes of the CB Twister and the Dream Yuga 110 commuter motorcycles.

110cc Commuter Motorcycle as seen at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo
The 110cc, four stroke engine that delivers a peak power of 9 Bhp and a peak torque of 9 Nm, is the first ever vertically inclined engine that Hero MotoCorp will use in its commuter motorcycle range. This is quite a departure from the norm as Hero MotoCorp has religiously stuck to the horizontally inclined four stroke engine, that Soichiro Honda first introduced in the legendary Honda Cub. So, the advent of the vertically inclined four stroke engine in the Passion X-Pro will be a global first of sorts for Hero MotoCorp.
The 110cc engine is expected to be tuned for high fuel economy and smooth power delivery, two typical traits of commuter motorcycles bearing the Hero MotoCorp insignia. While a self start is expected to be offered on this engine, the Passion X-Pro will also get a front disc brake as an option. This is one feature that the competition, read Suzuki Hayate 110 and Honda Dream Yuga 110, does not offer. The Passion X-Pro will also get alloy wheels on the top end variant. The Passion X-Pro is expected to be priced at around the INR 45,000 mark. Expect the motorcycle to be launched in the next few days, ahead of Diwali.
The Passion X-Pro 110 is a very important motorcycle model for Hero MotoCorp, which finds its dominance in the entry level-commuter motorcycle segment, its bread-and-butter segment, increasingly coming under threat from rivals like Honda and Bajaj Auto. Of the two, Honda is the bigger threat as the Japanese two wheeler giant has made rapid strides in the commuter motorcycle segment with the Dream Yuga 110. On the other hand, Hero MotoCorp has actually seen sales falling in the last few months even as Honda has gained marketshare. So, this Diwali Hero will be hoping that the Passion X-Pro puts the bang back in its sales.

Motorcycle repair shop still going strong

Inside the confines of the Motorcycle Palace, Aubrey Pancake rebuilds the engine of a classic 1963 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Pancake continues to turn wrenches and twist nuts and bolts – just like he’s done since his childhood days in rural Jones County, Ga.
These days, Pancake is a legend in the area when it comes to restoring, rebuilding and repairing Harleys.
His Martinez repair shop has been a fixture on Wheeler Road near Flowing Wells Road since 1976.
His business is an independent repair shop for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and Pancake makes it clear he has no formal ties with the company.
“I only fix Harleys,” said the 74-year-old.
Having developed a strong work ethic growing up as one of four children in rural James, Ga., Pancake said it’s no accident his business has thrived.
“My father always made sure we kids always had something to do around the house,” Pancake said. “He would give me tools to play with. That’s when I started tinkering with bicycles, lawn mowers, radios and old cars around the yard.”
While in high school, Pancake joined the Army Reserve and eventually joined the Navy Reserve. He later worked as an aircraft technician at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Ga., and served as an avionics instructor at Fort Gordon, he said.
Pancake’s father worked as an electrical engineer who wired residential and commercial structures, including cotton gins and sawmills.
Retired golf course manager Red Price, 72, is Pancake’s longtime friend and visits the shop when he has spare time.
“I’d say it’s his honesty, fairness and integrity that has kept him in business all these years,” Price said.
In May, Pancake and his wife, Nell, will celebrate 50 years of marriage. His wife helped get the business off to a good start.
“When he first started the business at home, I’d help him unhook parts from engines, clean them up and sort them in the yard for him to repair,” she said.
Pancake’s adult daughters, Teresa Pancake-Durand and Sheila Huffman, worked at the shop as teenagers. Mike Durand, Pancake’s son-in-law, said it’s an honor helping to keep the family legacy intact.
“I’ve learned so much from Pancake,” said Durand, who works at the shop as a mechanic. “Because of our location near I-20, we get customers from all over and if they need road assistance, he never hesitates to help.”
Since experiencing some health-related setbacks in recent years, Pancake said he’s considering retiring.
“It’s just about time to slow down and do some other things,” he said.
