Toyota completes 1970s forklift truck restoration


Toyota Material Handling UK has completed the restoration of a 1970s Toyota FG7 forklift truck, bringing it back to its former glory for all to see.
The Toyota FG7 gas-powered counterbalance forklift truck was renovated at Toyota's fleet management centre in Old Dalby, Leicestershire. The project was completed by four dedicated members of the team; apprentice technician Joe Power, paint sprayer Surinder Mahi with mentoring by senior engineer Chris Edwards and engineer Mark Astill.
The project was the idea of Mike Mathias, managing director for Toyota Material Handling UK.
Mike commented: "I wanted to introduce a project to inspire those individuals just starting out in a hands-on and practical way, but also demonstrate the skills and incredible attention to detail of Toyota's highly experienced technicians."
The 1971 FG7 gas-powered forklift truck, originally petrol-engined but later converted to gas and capable of lifting 1.5 tonnes was traded in for a newer model from a customer in South Wales, who was still using the truck for occasional use. The project was completed over a 12 month period with the work carried out in sections, including a comprehensive engine, gearbox and steering overhaul, the removal of a non-standard overhead guard as well as a complete re-paint using specially mixed paint. The truck was then completed with decals all true to the original factory specification.
The project was not without its difficulties. Kevin Davies, operations director for Toyota Material Handling UK commented: "Where original parts could not be sourced they had to be modified or fabricated. In addition, as technical information was not always readily available, this often caused unforeseen delays along the way."
Davies added: "The refurbishment project was the perfect opportunity in which our apprentice, Joe Power could take advantage of the wealth of experience around him, whilst allowing him to develop key skills in a practical and engaging way. At Toyota we believe in investing in our people and sharing the knowledge through coupling our apprentices with a mentor, individuals can develop their skills and this truck shows the fantastic end results that can be achieved. In addition, our more experienced technicians welcomed the opportunity to work with older technology reminiscent of their early days."
The completed fully operational truck will not be used for lifting but is now on display at the Toyota Leicester depot, where it will remain to demonstrate the skills of the team and how elements of the Toyota Production System (TPS) adopted throughout, has ensured the quality is second to none.

Cyclists in the Weston area might see new bike


WESTON -- Bicyclists in the Weston area might see new bike routes near the Birch street bike and pedestrian bridge as early as 2013, according to village officials.
The project, called the Birch Street Multi-Use Path Extension, ultimately will connect the newly constructed $1.9 million Birch Street bridge, which crosses Highway 29, with Camp Phillips Road and the existing Rothschild bike path. Alderson Street is being considered as a possible alternate route for the expansion.
Michael Wodalski, a project engineer and stormwater manager for Weston, said the village has hired Marshfield-based MSA Professional Services to design the path. Officials hope to have ideas to present to local residents later this spring, although construction is not expected to begin until 2013.
Wodalski said the path will improve access to the Cedar Creek area and will lead to increased use of the Birch Street Bridge, which already is seeing significant traffic.
"There has been a lot of interest in using the bridge, especially by special events in Marathon County," Wodalski said. The Freeze Your Buns Run, set for today, will use the bridge, and Stine Eye Care will hold an Eye Bike for Kids event in May that also will use the bridge.
Sprocketz bike store owner John Nowaczyk, who is a member of the Bike Pedestrian Subcommittee of the Municipal Planning Organization for Marathon County, said addressing the need to connect existing local bike routes is a priority for officials.
"The bridge and the new bike path are both pieces of a puzzle, intended to make the area safer and more accessible for everyone," Nowaczyk said. "Demographics show that people moving to this area want safer routes."
The village has an agreement with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for a grant to pay for up to $582,000 toward completion of the project. A complete cost estimate was not available.
The Birch Street bridge opened Dec. 19, after considerable delays officials say were caused by subcontractors.
Wodalski said some residents have questioned the need for a bike and pedestrian bridge during tough economic times.
"I took calls from people on both sides," Wodalski said. "I'm sure I'll be hearing from people (about) the path, too."
Nowaczyk defended the bridge, calling the need for it "huge."
"The monies were appropriated five years ago, and the majority (of the cost) was paid for with grant dollars," he said. "If it saves just one human life, it's worth it."

Honda Cub Specs

The Cub also comes standard with a kick starter, but upgraded models can be purchased with an electric starter.
Dimensions
The overall length of the Honda Cub motorcycle is 71 inches with a wheelbase of 46.3 inches, a width of 26 inches and a height of 40 inches. The bike has a dry weight of 165.3 lbs. and weighs approximately 180 lbs. with fuel, oil and other liquids. The earlier bikes weighed slightly less, between 122 and 155 lbs.
Tires and Brakes
The tires on the Honda Cub are moped tires sized 2.25-17 on the front and 2.50-17 on the rear. The front brakes on the Cub are drum, cable operated and the rear brakes are drum, rod operated.
Fuel Data
The Honda Cub is fuel efficient with a gas tank that holds 1.06 gallons of unleaded gas and has a fuel consumption of over 343 miles per gallon.
